Honestly, this is personal preference. There are so many different choices and it comes down to what you prefer. Each season has its pro and cons.

Fall is a super popular time for family portraits. Everyone is thinking about Christmas cards and wanting photos for that. So the fall is a logical time to take your photos. It’s cooler and you get the lovely fall colors. Also, who doesn’t love fall??

But if you always have your photos taken in the fall, all of your photos end up with more or less the same look. So if you are wanting a new look for your photos, maybe spring or summer would be a good choice for you.

Winter can also be a fun time for photos. Now, hear me out before you call me crazy! I personally really like winter. Especially if there is snow on the ground, winter makes for beautiful photos! The snow creates a huge reflector, which in turn creates really beautiful light and skintones.

I think we all know the con to winter photos. The cold! Winter can be super cold and that can make the most cheerful person kinda grumpy. I wouldn’t be quick to have your photos taken in the winter if you have little children. If you really want that clean white look, find coats, boots and other winter clothes that match the style you’re going for in your photos so that you can keep them on and it will make things go much more smoothly!

Spring is wonderful for photos! The fresh spring green color, the flowers, the warmer temperatures. If you’re really lucky and find cherry blossoms, so much the better! Everything looks fresh and clean coming to life again.

And along with spring comes the rain. Sometimes you may have to reschedule due to rain. Or your location might be all mud. Either way, having a backup location and being flexible is always a good idea.

Summer is probably the second most popular time of year for photos. It’s warm and the days are longer, so it’s easier to schedule photos around work. The light is usually glowy and beautiful!

So what are the cons of summer sessions? Well, the heat for one. Summer can get really warm and humid for photos. It can be uncomfortable to be all dressed up and have to look happy being so close to others. Also if you have really young children, summer sessions can get late for them. And while we photographers have a lot of tricks that we use to keep children happy, I really don’t want you to be stressed out because that your child might be a bit grumpy!

So there you have it! I hope this will help make the decision of when to schedule your family portrait session a little easier!
